Quality Consulting and Quality Management Systems
"Customer satisfaction" is the main element when defining and describing quality. If you are able to maintain your existing customer base, as well as obtain new customers, then you are achieving quality.
ISO 9000 is the quality management standard that has become synonymous with the word quality over the past 20+ years. It was originally released in 1987 and upgraded and released in 1994.
ISO 9001:2000, the current standard to which registration/certification is achieved, was released on December 15, 2000. This standard replaced the 1994 version of the ISO standard.
Under the 1994 version of the standard, organizations had a 3-option approach to achieving registration. Organizations could choose registration to either ISO 9001, 9002, or 9003. ISO 9001 was the most comprehensive standard of the group, with lesser requirements for 9002, and 9003.
ISO 9001:1994 was for those organizations that designed, developed, produced, and provided servicing for its products and services. ISO 9002 (19 of 20 elements of ISO 9001) was identical to ISO 9001, but was for those organizations that did not conduct design activities. ISO 9003 (16 of 20 elements of ISO 9001) was mostly for those that were performing final inspection and testing activities.
With the latest release of the ISO 9001:2000 standard, organizations no longer have this 3-option approach. Registration to the ISO standards can now only be obtained to one standard: ISO 9001:2000.
While the ISO 9001 standard is generic, it can be adopted by any organization, regardless of size or product/service offering. Currently the largest growth is in the service industries (rather than manufacturing).
